Spanish Prisoners

Watch the brand new video for “Know No Violence”“ off of Spanish Prisoners debut album Gold Fools. You don’t need me to tell you how great the video is. Just watch it and I’m sure you will agree. Makes me want to throw this album on the headphones and roam around the city. In fact, I’m going to do that as soon as I hit publish on this post.

For those who don’t know about this 4-piece-dream-pop goodness, well you are missing out! They released their debut album in October which just happens to be the same month I moved to New York and saw them at perform during CMJ for the very first time. Since then I have seen them live several times and it never gets old. I am going to see them again this Friday at The Knitting Factory with il Abanico and couldn’t be more excited.

They recently released two alt versions of ”Downtown Chicagoland“ so check the guitar arp version below. Spanish Prisoners fans just made their Vantasy come true on Kickstarter this week so congrats on getting the van paid for and being able to drive to SXSW! Wish I was going to be there this year. It also kills me that I won’t be able to attend their post-SXSW show at Stickyz in Little Rock, Arkansas March 18. For all my hometown homies reading this please get off the couch and watch them play with fellow Brooklynites Snowmine and Little Rock’s very own Knox Hamilton. It is the first ever show curated by yours truly so consider it your birthday present to me since I won’t be there to blow out the candles on my bday three days later. Takes lots of pictures for me and hashtag it with #StickyzMarch18 so I can follow along!

Liquid Skulls

This duo from Memphis/Little Rock are some friends of mine, Jimmy Spice and Jack Lloyd. I might be a little biased but I think you will agree that their latest album, in lungs, is next level. If you want to just space out and relax for a while then play “i/xi” or “about h” or just start to finish. Head to bandcamp and pick it up for $5. Sorry but they ran out of the 200 free downloads in just two days. If you are a fan of the older stuff then be on the lookout for the Dead IN YR Eyes tape from MABA

The Coasts

I recently met Ike Peters, half of The Coasts, on turntable.fm as he was spinning “Stranger/Danger”, a wonderful single off of thier self-titled debut album. Today the rest of the album was released on Bandcamp for just $5! It’s totally worth the money and a portion of the sales will go to Hope for Haiti’s Children. The best part about all of this is that Ike just moved to Little Rock, small world because that’s where I live! Hopefully I’ll get to see them jam in real life soon! The toughest part is deciding which song to post because the whole thing is great. I’m really liking “Like The Prophets Do”, I hope you do too!

Other Lives

Other Lives - For 12 (Official Video) from tbdrecords on Vimeo.

I started listening to Other Lives about a month ago when a friend told me her favorite band was opening for The Rosebuds in Little Rock on June 19th at Stickyz.  As I looked them up online I discovered that she was not the only one loving them. There have been loads of posts praising their latest album Tamer Animals. Above is the official video of “For 12”, one of my favorite songs on this album. Another favorite of mine is Dark Horse so give it a listen and catch them on tour. Hope to see you Sunday!

El Ten Eleven

This Mother’s Day was extra special, not only because my grandmother was in town, but because El Ten Eleven played a show in Little Rock! This was my second time to see them and their light show and overall performance just keeps blowing my mind! Click the photo for a video of Fanshawe that I caught. If for some reason you have never heard of the band, then I suggest you start with My Only Swerving and then go watch the documentaries Helvetica and Objectified. Keep an eye out for the third Gary Hustwit documentary Urbanized, which should feature more of these perfect, wordless tracks.

Generationals started off their tour in Little Rock, Arkansas last week and it was awesome! Click the photo to watch a video of their very first time playing ‘Yours Forever’ in front of a live crowd. It’s my favorite song off their latest album Actor-Caster. So check out the tour dates and see it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!

Kuhrye-oo

I was pretty bummed out when Star Slinger announced he wouldn’t be opening for Gobble Gobble and Baths for some of the US tour but this weekend Kuhrye-oo made up for it. Here is a video of Soul Handsome that I took using the 8mm app. Right after Calvin did his set he made a quick costume change, which included metal stilts, and got crazy with Gobble Gobble. We were very lucky to have such great bands in Little Rock this weekend.

I took this video last Thursday as Little Tybee got the packed bar at The Earl moving back and forth.  Adron was headlining but she shared the stage with them the entire set. At one point in the night they had eight people on stage! It was my first time in Atlanta and my first time seeing the band. They very much exceeded my expectations and set the tone for a great weekend!  Check out Paper Garden Records for tour dates.  I can’t wait to see them again at SXSW and on March 22 at Sticky Fingerz, my favorite Little Rock spot! Watch this neat promo video for their 2nd album Humorous To Bees out April 5.

Sun Hotel

I need to check in more often with the Arkansas Community Arts Co-Op, here in Little Rock. Last week I noticed that a band called Sun Hotel was playing Thursday night there. Since I am off work Friday for NYE, I crossed my fingers and hoped that they would be worth checking out. Luckily, they rock! The more I watch this video of Palms, off their album Coast (released September 2010), the more pumped I get about the show. Subscribe here on Youtube to keep up with them while on tour.  Suburb is also tops.

Jukebox the Ghost

Today is day 2 of using shuffler.fm to discover new tunes.  Through this awesome new service I came across MOKB’s post about the Jukebox the Ghost - Empire (Freelance Whales Remix). I have been a fan of Freelance Whales ever since I heard their song Generator ^ 2 Floor so this immediately caught my attention.  I have also been meaning to give Jukebox the Ghost a closer listen ever since I noticed they are playing in Little Rock at Juanita’s Sept 22.  I am kind of excited about seeing them now plus it’s only $7.  What’s there to lose besides some sleep.
